“Country you go, customs you find.”
There’s an old Italian proverb that says, “Country you go, customs you find.” It’s a saying that has stayed with me throughout my travels, and one that perfectly sums up my journey of discovering Queensland’s Granite Belt.
Perhaps it’s no coincidence that I felt so at home here. The region has a rich Italian heritage, a thriving wine culture and, most importantly, a community of passionate people who genuinely care about what they create. In many ways, it reminds me of the Tuscany I grew up in.
In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and the relentless pace of modern life, I believe the real heroes are the people who continue to make things with their hands, share their stories and preserve traditions. These are the people who inspire me. They are the reason I love creating tours, whether we’re exploring the villages of Puglia or the vineyards of Stanthorpe.
I’ve never seen myself as the main attraction. My role is simply to uncover these hidden gems and introduce them to travellers who are curious enough to look beyond the obvious. The greatest reward is watching genuine connections form between our guests and the people who so generously open their doors to us.

It’s impossible not to be inspired by people like Clarissa, who created her very first cooking class especially for our group, sharing recipes that celebrate the incredible local produce of the Granite Belt.
Or John and Coby from Josie’s, who opened their restaurant exclusively for us and welcomed us like family. Listening to John tell the story of his grandmother, Giuseppina, who emigrated from Naples in the 1950s, you quickly realise that every dish he serves is much more than food. It’s a tribute to family, heritage and the memories that shaped him.
These are the experiences that stay with you long after the trip has finished.
The Granite Belt may still be one of Queensland’s best-kept secrets, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. Beyond the wineries lies a vibrant community of farmers, chefs, winemakers and artisans who are creating experiences that are authentic, personal and full of heart. It’s a destination that deserves to be discovered with fresh eyes.

I’m also incredibly excited to welcome Marc to the BackTrack Adventures family as our local guide and representative for the Granite Belt and Northern New South Wales.
After years leading hiking and camping expeditions through some of Australia’s most spectacular landscapes, Marc now shares his passion for this remarkable region, introducing guests to its hidden cellar doors, artisan producers and breathtaking scenery. His local knowledge and genuine enthusiasm make him the perfect person to help you experience the Granite Belt the way it deserves to be experienced.
