Unplugged and on Island Time – K’gari

Paradise close to home, my weekend away on K’gari.

K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) is a pristine paradise just off the coast of Queensland. A World Heritage–listed sand island, it’s home to ancient dunes, crystal-clear freshwater lakes, lush rainforests, and plenty of local wildlife, which includes the famous dingoes!

It’s the only known place in the world where a rainforest grows entirely on sand, a natural wonder that feels worlds away yet is easily accessible via ferry at Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach. Whether you prefer camping under the stars, cozy cabins, or resort-style comfort, K’gari is the perfect place to unplug and reconnect with nature.

Living so close to such beauty, I’d always wanted to visit, but one small issue held me back: I don’t own a four-wheel drive. And on K’gari, a 4WD is more essential than underwear. With its iconic 75 Mile Beach doubling as a highway, there’s no other way to get around.

To fix that little problem, I joined a tag-along tour with a group of fellow travellers keen to explore. We had four cars between us and spent our days visiting Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), Eli Creek, the Maheno Shipwreck, and Central Station. We cruised through sandy rainforest tracks and camped right among the trees.

The campsite gave major school camp vibes, and I was totally here for it. We cooked dinner together, roasted s’mores by the fire, and walked down to the beach at night armed with our trusty “dingo sticks” (aka PVC pipes).

My visit was short but sweet, and I’d 100% go back again. K’gari truly is paradise close to home.
