Tips for preparing for an expedition cruise

Expedition cruises are a unique and exciting way to explore remote and untouched destinations around the world. However, preparation is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your next expedition cruise:

Research your destination: Research the destination you will be visiting to understand the environment, wildlife, and cultural norms where applicable. Most importantly, research the weather to ensure you pack appropriately for where you are travelling, understanding that conditions might change quickly in some locations. If you are unsure, ask us for guidance and will be able to provide you with recommendations or a packing list.

Familiarise yourself with your ship and its activities: Expedition ships offer many amenities and activities, but they can vary widely between ships. Along with exciting shore excursions and wildlife encounters, on board you’ll typically have access to enriching lectures, workshops and presentations by experts, fostering a deeper appreciation of the region you are visiting and a greater understanding of conservation efforts. Plan ahead to ensure that you don’t miss out on any experiences that interest you.

Prepare your photography equipment: Camera phones are great these days, but if you’re more of a photographer purist be sure to pack a quality camera that you know how to use (practise before you depart!) and ensure that you have sufficient memory cards and batteries on hand as it may not be possible to purchase more at your destination.

Medical precautions: Consult your doctor for necessary vaccinations and health advice. If you’re prone to seasickness, bring any medications recommended by your doctor as a precaution, along with enough supply of your existing medications for your time away. Expedition cruises often visit remote areas where medical facilities and access to medications may be limited.

Be flexible: Understand that weather conditions and other factors may lead to itinerary changes. Be open to new experiences and embrace the spontaneity and sense of adventure that comes with exploring uncharted territories!
