Today, the picturesque mountains surrounding the fjord attract visitors, as does the imposing Godafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods”: according to legend, it was here that the priest Porgeir threw the pagan idols into the water around the year AD 1,000 – an event immortalised in a stained-glass window in the church of Akureyri.
