Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5895 metres, is the highest mountain on the African continent. This snow-covered summit soars high above the plains of East Africa. There is nothing like the exhilaration of reaching the summit!
We have chosen to trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro using the Lemosho Route. The success rate of summiting for many trek companies is very low, because the route offered and time allocated is not sufficient.
Back Track has never had a trekker fail to summit due to poor acclimatisation. We have explored and travelled all routes to the summit over many years and Lemosho is our choice because –
• It is breathtakingly scenic
• It offers an excellent chance to acclimatise safely and sensibly. It is a long way to travel from Australia, so best you plan to give yourself every possible chance for success.
Normally this trek is done over eight days; Back Track takes nine days. We have added an extra acclimatisation day to maximise your chance of a successful summit bid. You will be well prepared and ready for your conquest of Kilimanjaro; It will still be a wonderful adventure and challenge.
Meals included as indicated: B - Breakfast, L - Lunch, D - Dinner
Day 1Meet in Moshi, the commencement point for both the Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro ascents. This pleasant town to the south of Kilimanjaro is an ideal place to spend time before and after your trek. There’s an abundance of cafes, restaurants, bars and comfortable accommodation. You’ll find numerous shops to purchase souvenirs and there’s also a couple of places hiring and selling trekking equipment. In Moshi, we stay at the comfortable, Kilimanjaro Wonders Hotel.

SHIRA 1 (3840M) (BLD)
Day 3The trail ascends through the forest and emerges onto a zone of heathland scrub, tall grass and moss-covered volcanic rock. After crossing a number of streams, the trail meets Shira Ridge and our first view of Kilimanjaro. Camp at Shira 1.
MOIR HUT (4140M) (BLD)
Day 4Today we ascend gradually across the moorland of Shira Plateau. Time permitting, we can divert off the trail to visit spectacular viewpoints. Our destination is Moir Hut, 30 minutes off the trail and one of the least used campsites on Kilimanjaro. This is our base for two nights.
MOIR HUT (4140M) (BLD)
Day 5As part of our acclimatisation, we spend a second night at Moir Hut. This also gives us the opportunity for exploration of the nearby Lent Hills (4700m). Trekking up to this high altitude and returning to sleep at a lower altitude will greatly enhance our acclimatisation.
BARRANCO CAMP (3950M) (BLD)
Day 6A long trek to Barranco. After leaving camp we rejoin the main trail. We stop for lunch at the spectacular rock outcrop of Lava Tower (4600m). This camp lies in a sheltered area below the spectacular cliffs of the Breach Wall. The Breach Wall, the dome of Uhuru and the edge of the Heim Glacier dominate the head of the valley. Overnight at Barranco Camp.
KARANGA CAMP (4000M) (BLD)
Day 7Today is an integral part of our acclimatisation program. By only moving camp a little higher we greatly increase our chances of a successful summit bid. Here is our last water point.
BARAFU CAMP (4600M) (BLD)
Day 8In the morning trek to Barafu. Huge glaciers and cliffs can be seen which mark this part of the mountain. Overnight Barafu Camp.
MWEKA HUT (3100M) (BLD)
Day 9At midnight, the trek begins up to the final steep, scree section to reach Stella Point. Walk steadily up the ridge and around the crater to reach Uhuru peak at 5895m. From the summit the trek descends to overnight at Mweka Hut.
Day 10Covering the last section of the mountain, the trek continues down through the forests to the gate where our vehicle will be waiting to transport you back to Moshi. Overnight in Moshi at the Kilimanjaro Wonders Hotel.
