Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5895 metres, is the highest mountain on the African continent. This snow-covered summit soars high above the plains of East Africa. There is nothing like the exhilaration of reaching the summit! We have chosen to trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro using the Lemosho Route.

Normally this is done over seven or eight days; Back Track takes nine days. We have added an extra acclimatisation day to maximise your chance of a successful summit bid. You will be well prepared and ready for your conquest of Kilimanjaro in 2022.

Meals included as indicated: B - Breakfast, L - Lunch, D - Dinner

Arusha, Tanzania

Day 1

Meet in Arusha, the commencement point for both the Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro ascents. This thriving town sits in the lush countryside at the foot of Mt Meru (4556m). The town’s market is alive with colour, its stalls piled high with fresh fruit and vegetables. The craft shops offer a range of superb ebony Makonde carvings, malachite jewellery and bright local fabrics. In Arusha, we stay at the comfortable, Outpost Safari Lodge. (B)

Commence climb of Mt Kilimanjaro Camp at Mti Mkubwa (2820m)

Day 2

Kilimanjaro, at 5896m, is the highest peak in Africa and one of the highest volcanoes on earth. There is no need for ropes or technical equipment to reach the summit. This imposing mountain is revered by the local Chagga people and our chosen route on Kili is the Lemosho/ Mweka trail. This is the most scenic trail and passes through Kili’s complete range of landscape and vegetation types. It is also quieter than the usual tourist trail. The Lemosho route is normally done over 7 nights. We are doing it over 8 nights to allow for extra acclimatisation. Drive to Londorossi Gate (2100m) and commence trekking through a lush forested zone to our first camp at Mti Mkubwa. (BLD)

Shira 1 (3840m)

Day 3

The trail ascends through the forest and emerges onto a zone of heathland scrub, tall grass and moss covered volcanic rock. After crossing a number of streams the trail meets Shira Ridge and our first view of Kilimanjaro. Camp at Shira 1. (BLD)

Moir Hut (4140m)

Day 4

Today we ascend gradually across the moorland of Shira Plateau. Time permitting, we can divert off the trail to visit spectacular viewpoints. Our destination is Moir Hut, 30 minutes off the trail and one of the least used campsites on Kilimanjaro. This is our base for two nights. (BLD)

Moir Hut (4140m)

Day 5

As part of our acclimatisation, we spend a second night at Moir Hut. This also gives us the opportunity for exploration of the nearby Lent Hills (4700m). Trekking up to this high altitude and returning to sleep at a lower altitude will greatly enhance our acclimatisation. (BLD)

Barranco Camp (3950m)

Day 6

A long trek to Barranco. After leaving camp we rejoin the main trail. We stop for lunch at the spectacular rock outcrop of Lava Tower (4600m). This camp lies in a sheltered area below the spectacular cliffs of the Breach Wall. The Breach Wall, the dome of Uhuru and the edge of the Heim Glacier dominate the head of the valley. Overnight at Barranco Camp. (BLD)

Karanga Camp

Day 7

Today is an integral part of our acclimatisation program. By only moving camp a little higher we greatly increase our chances of a successful summit bid. Here is our last water point. (BLD)

Barafu Camp (4600m)

Day 8

In the morning trek to Barafu. Huge glaciers and cliffs can be seen which mark this part of the mountain. Overnight Barafu Camp. (BLD)

Mweka Hut (3100m)

Day 9

At midnight, the trek begins up to the final steep, scree section to reach Stella Point. Walk steadily up the ridge and around the crater to reach Uhuru peak at 5895m. From the summit, the trek descends to overnight at Mweka Hut. (BLD)

Day 10

Covering the last section of the mountain, the trek continues down through the forests to the gate where our vehicle will be waiting to transport you back to Arusha. Overnight in Arusha at the Outpost Safari Lodge. (BL)
