Clare’s pick: Set on Maria Island, a world heritage listed national park just off the east coast of Tasmania, this gentle four-day guided walk combines rare Tasmanian wildlife, spectacular scenery, and fascinating history. Is there a better place on the planet to spend four days? We think not, and you will come back recharged, not wiped out! Check this out:
- Day 1 (8km) –go by boat to Maria Island through the sparkling waters of Mercury Passage. Like the explorers before you, drink in the pristine, untouched beach. Enjoy lunch overlooking the crystal azure waters of Shoal Bay, then explore the trail through the tall eucalypt forest down to the spectacular Haunted Bay;
- Day 2 (13kms) – after breakfast, start your journey along five beautiful beaches;
- Day 3 (9 to 17kms) –go into the heart of the Island to discover the grand forests. You’ll wander through the world’s largest stand of giant Tasmanian blue gums and can choose to climb the peaks of Mt Maria or Bishop and Clerk;
- Day 4 (4kms) – the final day takes you through a variety of spectacular woodlands and forests, and to the dramatic sea cliffs of Fossil Bay.
At night, the guides serve a 3-course, candlelit dinner under the stars complimented by award winning Tasmanian wines.
