Kerala, a state in southern, tropical India is a wonderous land of serene backwaters and coconut palm lined beaches. Further inland the coastal plains rise to the Western Ghats whose vast fertile slopes grow a variety of spices, cashews, tea and coffee. National Parks are home to elephant, primates and the elusive tiger. Kerala’s 600km coastline supports a lively fishing industry making seafood an important part of the local cuisine. The port city of Cochin was an important spice trade post and was the first place of European colonization in India. First occupied by the Portuguese followed by the Dutch then British, Cochin abounds with European architecture including Christian churches.
