If your ambition is to walk amongst the highest, most majestic mountains on earth then this is the trek for you. The Everest area of Nepal is famous due to the exploits of mountaineers such as Hillary, Tenzing, Bonnington, Messner and Macartney-Snape.
The Sherpa people who inhabit Khumbu, as the area is called, are well-known for their cheerful hospitality. This trek visits their villages and monasteries and provides a wonderful opportunity for cultural interaction. The 5545m ‘hill’ of Kala Pattar, is the highest point of the trek. You’ll stand in awe, inspired by breathtaking beauty. Mt Everest and a host of Himalayan giants will surround you in a 360 degree panorama that you’ll never forget. The following day, we plan to trek to Everest Base Camp. The views from here up the rugged Khumbu Icefall are simply awe-inspiring.

For us at Back Track, trekking is our way of life. We always prepare well and are dedicated to ensuring that our trekkers have the holiday of a lifetime. Our trekking itineraries are arranged so we can meet each day’s objective in a leisurely fashion.
As well, a program for acclimatisation is built into each itinerary so everyone will have the maximum chance to acclimatise to the altitudes in which they are trekking. There is plenty of time to stop and take photographs, rest, or just have a cup of tea with the locals in a village tea house.
Our group size is limited to a maximum of 14 trekkers plus our Back Track trekking crew. Having only small groups ensures all trekkers are given maximum attention and assistance when required. Once booked, you will be issued with comprehensive Pre Departure Information detailing your gear and clothing requirements and everything you need to know to ensure you are professionally prepared. In addition, you have access to a trekking expert at any time by calling us on our ’1300′ Trekkers Assist line.
Sherpa Lodge Style
Our Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes and Everest High Passes treks are conducted in Sherpa Lodge Style.
The Khumbu area of Nepal, home to the Sherpa people, is where these treks take place. The Sherpas have a long association with western trekkers providing guides and climbing crew for mountaineers way back to the early 1920’s. In their homelands they have built an infrastructure of clean, basic and comfortable lodges in all the major villages and trekking locations. Therefore there is no need to camp on these treks. Back Track utilises these lodges for accommodation. Rooms are usually twin share with comfortable beds.
Includes breakfast daily plus all tips for local trek crew.
To save you money, for the duration of the trek a Camp Kit is provided consisting of a warm sleeping bag, suitable for cold Himalayan nights, and a kit bag to hold your belongings on the trek. The kit bag is carried by your porter.
This trek is graded challenging, requiring participants to commit to a dedicated training program prior to departure. Depending on your current level of fitness, if you are not as fit as you would like to be, a minimum 3 month program is required to ensure that you are fit enough to enjoy the trek. Back Track willingly provides advice to all our trekkers on how to obtain the required fitness level. Your pre-departure information guide contains extensive fitness training information.

Day 7: PHORTSE TENGA 3680m (4 hrs)
As part of our gradual acclimatisation, today’s walk is short with minimal altitude gain. From Khumjung monastery (purported to contain a genuine Yeti skull), the trail ascends to our lodge near the Dudh Kosi River that flows from the foot of Mt Everest. (B)
Day 8: DOLE 4090m (3 hrs)

DAY 12: DZONGLA 4910m via CHO LA 5420m (7 hrs)
Depart early for a tough 4 hour climb to the top of Cho La. We pause for a snack and some fantastic photo opportunities. Then it’s a long, slow descent to the group of lodges at Dzongla and the finish to an exciting day. (B)
Note: Crossing Cho La will only be attempted if weather and trail conditions are ideal. There is an alternative trail available if necessary.
DAY 13: LOBUCHE 4930m (3 hrs)
Today’s trail follows a ridge high above the Khumbu valley before descending to the Khumbu Glacier. An easy trail takes us to the lodges at Lobuje. (B)
DAY 14: GORAK SHEP 5170m & EVEREST BASE CAMP 5360m (8 hrs)
From Lobuche we trek for 2 hours on a rough, rock strewn trail to Gorak Shep. We’ll have lunch here and a short rest before crossing over the Khumbu Glacier on the 3 hour trek to Everest Base Camp (5360). There are no views of Everest’s summit from here but there are fine views of the Khumbu Ice Fall and the large seracs of ice on the glacier beside base camp. We retrace our steps to our lodge at Gorak Shep. (B)
DAY 15: PHERICHE 4240m via KALA PATTAR 5545m (9 hrs)
Our goal today is the highest point of the trek, Kala Pattar, 5545 meters. Kala Pattar is the ideal place to view the dark, menacing south face of Everest. Surrounded by mountains and glaciers, the breathtaking scenery will truly make you feel “On Top of the World”. Making it to the top of Kala Pattar is a tremendous accomplishment, and for most, a once in a lifetime experience. We depart Gorak Shep well before dawn, walking by the beam of our headlamps. The return walk, plus rest times from Gorak Shep to the top of Kala Pattar is about 3 hours. After returning to Gorak Shep for breakfast, we then retrace our steps past Lobuje descending to our lodge on the wide plain at Pheriche village. (B)
DAY 16: DEBOCHE 3757m (3 hrs)
A shorter day after the previous day’s exertions. The views down the trail ahead of the snow peaks arrayed before us are magnificent. We stop for lunch and a night at the pleasant settlement of Deboche. Relax or take an afternoon stroll to visit the impressive Tengboche monastery. (B)
DAY 17: NAMCHE BAZAAR 3440m (4 hrs)

Thank you to our Back Track trekkers who have travelled with us in Nepal and shared their feedback:
I would just like to thank Ray (Australian Trek Leader) and his crew for the exceptional support and care given to all of the members of the trek group. Making decisions on a trek with such exceptional circumstances (Nepal Earthquake), is always going to be very difficult. But I was always confident that Ray and the crew had the safety of trek and crew members as the first priority.
Paul, Everest High Passes, April 2015
I cannot even begin to explain how eye-opening this trip ahs been. Back Track ahs been AMAZING in organising and preparing us all for this incredible experience. I also have to say a huge thank you to all of the thoughtful, caring crew we’ve spent the last 2 weeks with. Always happy to help even if its not needed. The situation that happened with the Earthquake was handled amazingly and positively! Ray kept us all so positive. I’ll be back to trek with Back Track again for sure.

An excellent well-run trek. The support crew were amazing and Damian was also excellent and knowledgeable. The training program before going was well created, but nothing really readys you for trekking at altitude. Challenging but rewarding – Thank you.

This Everest trip changed my life. Spencer was an amazing leader who was just there every step of the way! Words can’t describe the real experiences I’ve had in Nepal and I look forward to going back as soon as I can. Spencer was extremely knowledegeable, kind, uplifting and occasionally pushy – but that’s exactly what I needed!!! I want do so much more with Backtrack. Their service and knowledge is world class and so perfectly intimate! Thanks
Sheridan, Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes, November 2012
Just a quick note to say loved the trip. Struggled with the altitude from Namche and probably the odd day of not drinking enough. Everyone I have spoken to is so impressed that everyone in our group who wanted to get to base camp made it, as we heard that on other companies, a fair number struggling with the altitude don’t get there. Heather was great with managing each of us and our trekking family. If it wasn’t for her I don’t know whether I would have made it and enjoyed my time away. Do feel a real sense of achievement. Your other staff in Nepal also all worked well together and made life on the trail easier. Have passed your details onto those who ask along with a high recommendation.
